Graduate Program

College of Arts and Sciences

The participating programs in the Psychology Department are Cognitive Psychology and Social Psychology.

Cognitive Psychology

The cognitive psychology program is a strong doctoral program within the Department of Psychology. The program's particular strengths are in the study of high-level cognitive processes, including text comprehension, memory, and the acquisition and retention of complex skills.

The training in cognitive psychology is a 5-year program. The first year involves a sequence of intensive proseminars and required graduate level courses in statistics and experimental methodology. All students are required to complete their master's thesis before being admitted to the Ph.D. program. Many students take coursework outside the department, frequently in computer science and/or linguistics.

Ph.D. students from this program are quickly placed in both academic (e.g., University of Minnesota, Florida State, Northwestern, and New Mexico State, Purdue) and industrial jobs (e.g., IBM, NYNEX, US West, General Motors, and Hewlett-Packard).

The ICS Faculty Fellows in this program include:

Social Pyschology

Social psychology trains students to conduct research, either applied or basic, in the fields of social cognition, judgment and decision making, and social behavior, including social development, self-concept development, close relationships, and health. The substantive focus of the program is the interface between individual cognitive processes and social behavior. Social behavior is defined broadly to cover the range from intrapsychic processes, to dyadic interaction, to societal-level policy decisions. Research interests focus on the cognitions, emotions, attitudes, and values which affect social behavior and which are influenced by the behavior of others.
