Cognitive Linguistics

Within the Department of Linguistics, the program in cognitive linguistics is the primary participant in the cognitive science program. Students admitted to this highly interdisciplinary Ph.D. program are expected to already have one course in experimental methods and one course in cognitive psychology or take these courses in their first year. These students, in addition to fulfilling the requirements for the general linguistics degree, are expected to take a two-semester research practicum in the Psychology Department or the equivalent in Computer Science and take eight additional credit hours in cognitive science-oriented courses either within the Linguistics Department or in other ICS member departments. They are also required to demonstrate competence in at least one programming language.

The department also offers a Ph.D. program in general linguistics.

The ICS Faculty Fellows in this program are:

  • Professor Lise Menn
  • Associate Professor Alan Bell
  • Professor Barbara Fox, Chair
  • Assistant Professor Daniel Jurafsky
  • Assistant Professor Laura Michaelis
  • Associate Professor Martha Palmer
