Within the Department of Computer Science, the program in artificial intelligence (AI) is the primary participant in the cognitive science program. One of the seven doctoral specialty graduate programs within the Department of Computer Science, AI is a young but flourishing program with two subspecialties: human-computer interaction and connectionist computation.

A four-course core program is offered with emphasis on traditional AI approaches, connectionism, and knowledge-based systems and is supplemented by advanced seminars. Extensive computational research and training facilities are available and were funded in part by a $5 million National Science Foundation CER grant to the Department of Computer Science. The students from this program are in high demand in the industrial community. A number of students have gone on to work for US West and other local industries.
