Requirements for
Ph.D. in Cognitive Science
- 30 hours of cognitive science courses. A cognitive science course
is one that was included in the list of ICS approved courses during
the semester you took the course.
a. 9 hours of required cognitive science core courses
1. Issues and Methods in Cognitive Science (3 credits)
2. Topics in Cognitive Science (2 semesters
at 1 credit per semester)
3. Cognitive Science Research Practicum (2 semesters at 2 credits
per semester)
b. 21 hours of other elective cognitive science courses
- At least 12 hours outside the home department, including courses
in at least two different departments outside the home department.

- At least 2 interdisciplinary courses. An interdisciplinary
course is one that was included on the list of ICS approved
interdisciplinary courses during the semester you took the course.

- Interdisciplinary thesis. The original contributions of the dissertation
research should exploit state of the art methods from the perspective
of at least two disciplines. Students are encouraged to have their
doctoral research co-supervised by two faculty members representing
different disciplines.

- Four cognitive science courses. A cognitive science course is
one that was included in the list of ICS approved courses during the
semester you took the course.
a. All courses at least two credit hours
b. Issues and Methods in Cognitive Science
c. Courses from at least two different departments outside of home
department
d. At least one elective course is an interdisciplinary course. An
interdisciplinary course is one that was included on the list of ICS
approved interdisciplinary courses during the semester you took the
course.
